Earlier this month I delivered a workshop on media freedom for UNDP in one of the world's most closed countries, Turkmenistan.
“Human rights education in journalism is essential to building a culture of respect for human dignity, equality and social justice.” Those were the words of the UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan, Narine Sahakyan, when she opened the event, which was organized by UNDP and the Ombudsperson 's Office of Turkmenistan.
Over the course of two days, journalists, students and representatives of ministries discussed international human rights protection, freedom of expression and the importance of National Human Rights Institutions to promote and protect human rights.
